While both vegetable-tanned (or veg-tanned) and chrome-tanned leather start from the same raw material, different tanning processes are used for each which lead to several differences.

• Chrome-Tanning uses soluble chromium salts (specifically trivalent chromium) to tan the hides. This is a modern, highly automated chemical process that takes only a few days. The texture is typically softer and more pliable right from the start. With this process, leather will typically hold its original color and appearance consistently over time and won’t develop a significant patina. This type of leather is also more resistant to water, heat, and stains due to the chemical finish. It requires less maintenance but tends to wear out over decades rather than wearing in. Because of this, these journals are priced slightly lower than Vegetable-Tanned journals.

• Vegetable-Tanning uses natural tannins extracted from plant matter, such as tree bark (oak, chestnut, or mimosa), leaves, and roots. This is an ancient, artisan craft that takes anywhere from several weeks to months to complete. The texture is notably stiffer and firmer initially, though it breaks in beautifully and softens with use. It is highly reactive to its environment. It absorbs oils, sunlight, and wear to develop a deeply coveted, darker patina over time, making every item unique. It is incredibly durable and holds its shape exceptionally well. If properly cared for with occasional conditioning, it can easily last for generations. This is why these journals are considered more luxury and are priced higher.

tldr; chrome-tanned leather is less durable and thus cheaper, while vegetable tanned leather is very durable and will be more expensive. Both are amazing in their own ways
